Destination Unknown (Donnie Skaggs, Tom Botkin & Les
Rawlins)
They say half the fun is getting there and in this song "...Half
the fun of getting' there is just not knowin'." A woman meets a man
in a parking lot and they embark on a mysterious road trip. "Max T.
Barnes was sending us songs faster than we could listen to them,"
says Victor. This mid-tempo one was the one that hooked Victor.
"'Destination Unknown' really jumped out at us. If this scenario
didn't happen to a man in his youth, he probably always hoped it would have."
One Forever (Dan Turman & Skip Ewing)
Songwriters Skip Ewing and Dan Turner put into words what true love
really is. "My manager, Rusty Graham, loved this song from the
first time he heard it but thought it may be a little too pop,"
says Victor. "We went back and forth on this one. When he thought
we should use it, I didn't and when I thought we should use it, he
didn't, but it always stayed in the mix. Finally, I sat down one day and
sang it for him and he said, 'We have GOT to use it' and I'm glad we
did."
I'm Gonna Be There (Mark Elliott & Roy Hurd)
About a man resolved to find love, ready for it to come his way, this
was the first song Victor found; it was on a friend's demo. "I
couldn't believe he hadn't cut it. It's a positive up-tempo song about a
guy ready to find the love of his life. I guess I'm a sucker for love
songs."
Only You (Victor Sanz)
When asked to sing a song for his friend's wedding, Victor knew he had
to write something special. "Steve, my best friend, has had a lot
of girlfriends. When he told me that he had finally found the girl that
he wanted to spend the rest of his with, I knew I had to try to express
just how important this relationship was to him. So I wrote this song to
sing at his wedding."
I Go Crazy (Paul Davis)
This 1977 single from Paul Davis' Singer of Songs-Teller of Tales still
moves audiences, including Victor who comments, "When we were
looking for songs, a friend of mine wanted me to consider something from
Paul Davis. When "I Go Crazy' came on, I remembered those beginning
signature licks at the front and how emotional I felt when I first heard
the song. It just had to be on the album."
It's About Time (Dan Truman, Wade Kerby & Tom McHugh)
Breaking up is hard to do, and getting back together can be tough to
maneuver. "This is a song about a guy and a girl who parted. When
the guy realizes what he lost, he asks to have a heart-to-heart with his
ex-girlfriend to tell her he wants to get back together."
Remembering The Future (George Teren & Tom Shapiro)
Like the previous song, this one deals with a man who wants his life
back in order and his love back. "I think what attracted me to this
song was the lyric structure and the hook. When you listen to it, you
can almost visualize what's happening."
You Could Have Fooled Me (Kerry Kurt Phillips, Mike Higgins
& Heath Wright)
Ignorance can be bliss. "If you listen to the lyrics in this song,
it's pretty comical," says Victor. "It's not only an up-tempo
and fun song, but it's also very cleverly worded."
Now I'm On My Own (Billy Kirsch & Steve Wariner)
Boy has girl. Boy takes girl for granted. Girl gets fed up. Boy
is alone. This song deals with taking one's mate for granted. Victor
comments, "This is a sad story that's repeated time after time in
life. It's hard to sing or listen to this song without getting
emotional."
More Than I Want To Know (Max T. Barnes & David Malloy)
Ever received unwanted information? In this song, when asking his
partner about their relationship, the man receives some not-so-assuring
news. "When I first heard it all I could think was, 'talk as fast
as you can and keep your fingers in your ears,"' says Victor.
I Go Crazy
(surprise version) (Paul Davis & Victor Sanz)
Victor explains, "When we were recording the original version of
this song, I was in the vocal booth warming up, singing in Spanish.
Rusty and Max called me into the room; Rusty asked me to do the verses
in Spanish and the chorus in English. I said 'No way, I've never sung in
Spanish!' It took Rusty three days to talk me into it." After
recording it, Rusty, Max and Victor were pleased with this bilingual
track. This surprise version of "I Go Crazy" is a memorable
and unique addition to the album.
