How did a nice girl like
you wind up in a place like this?
Her travels to Nashville
began in 1994 when a television commercial on TNN prompted her
to buy a videotape about songwriting. The tape led her to attend
a yearly songwriting camp sponsored by Nashville Songwriters
Association International (NSAI). After receiving numerous
accolades at the camp, Carolyn made several trips to Nashville
and eventually moved in 1996.
After moving to
Nashville, she waited tables (at Phil Vassar's night club) and
sang on the side. Eventually, she landed a publishing deal with
one of Nashville's leading independent music publishers, Patrick
Joseph Music (Matraca Berg, Kim Carnes, Gary Harrison, Tim
Mensy, etc.)
The first time she heard
Chely's version of Single White Female was in the parking
lot of a Nashville restaurant. She recognized the familiar
signature hook coming from the stereo of a truck parked in the
lot. Racing over to the truck and startling the occupant who was
frantically trying to lock the doors, Carolyn discovered that
the driver was Chely Wright. After introducing herself and
sharing a laugh, the two listened to the song together. It was
the day Chely had cut the song and the first time Carolyn had
heard it. Right then, Chely predicted, "that's going to be
my first #1 song." It WAS!
